In-ear Xiaomi Pro HD: too rough audio rendering
Aprox. 38€ - see price -
In the wake of the TT-EP01 and their staggering quality / price ratio, here are the Pro HD, in-ear headphones launched in 2017 by Xiaomi. For less than € 30, the Chinese manufacturer, freshly and massively available in our regions, promises a rich, balanced and natural sound performance, excellent comfort, a robust construction and an exhaustive range of controls.
Our review
Ergonomics
The Pro HDs assert their identity in all discretion, the whole returning at the first glance a neat or even sophisticated impression. All clad in aluminum, the chassis draws clean, frank and fluid lines, and benefits from a particularly clean finish.
The reinforcement at the start of the cable, in semi-gloss black plastic, and the sheath itself, in rubber rather than in braided fabric, however betray their tariff membership. However, it should be noted that these materials, not only light, provide flexibility and elasticity, essential properties for nomadic use.
At the other end of the cable, the mini-jack is unfortunately not bent - a point this time negative for their lifespan. Indeed, the readers (smartphones, walkman ...) being most often slipped in a pocket, the forces exerted at the junction of the cable (tensions, twists, folds ...) are much more dangerous when the mini-jack is straight , all the more so when the first centimeter is so little reinforced.
Angled at 45 °, the tips are very easily inserted into the user's duct and are held there perfectly naturally - the lightness of the assembly also contributes. Four pairs of tips are provided (XS, S, M, L), but we still deplore the absence of a pair of memory foam. Never mind: the cannula being of standard size, it is always possible to acquire a pair and install it there.
As promised, the remote control is indeed complete, offering all the usual functions: play / pause, call management, switching to the next / previous track (double / triple press), and volume control. Alas ... all commands are only accessible with Xiaomi smartphones! On iOS or Android, depending on the model, the possibilities vary: the main button still works (play / pause and call management), but volume adjustment or navigation between tracks are not guaranteed.
Audio
The first thing you notice is the lack of bass extension. Pro HD sorely lack this bed which is the strength and energy of a mix, even its immersive nature. Indeed, the bass drops quickly below 200 Hz - still noticeable around 100 Hz, they are only a shadow of themselves from 60 Hz (as much to say that you can say goodbye to the sweep of intro in Unfinished Sympathy) -, but it is also important to specify that the reinforcement which one observes on the curve above in the low-mids (between 80 Hz and 400 Hz) is much less significant with the listen as you could imagine. In fact, the low mids are certainly not on the front of the stage, and even lack a little presence to be able to convey a real feeling of immersion. In addition, there is a slight crosstalk (interference between the channels), which prevents the stereophonic scene from unfolding as widely as the original mix hears.
As you might have guessed, the second part of the spectrum has the lion's share. The richness of the timbres is respected, the voices are perfectly intelligible thanks to the reinforcement between 1 and 2 kHz and the acoustic spaces are fairly precisely reproduced. Alas, here too the uneven nature of the frequency response makes its own (accents at 4 kHz, 8 kHz and 11 kHz), generating a rendering ranging from slightly hissing ("psshht psshht") to acid depending on the listening level. This phenomenon is reflected much less on the sibilants - very little sibilance to report - than around 4 kHz, mainly on the cymbals which take on a very hissing aspect. There is also a distortion which, as the listening volume increases, blurs the cards and can considerably affect the accuracy of the rendering.
Conclusion
In terms of ergonomics, the Pro HD have an aesthetic, robust and reliable construction, excellent comfort and support as well as a complete remote control ... provided you connect them to a Xiaomi smartphone. On the audio side, the rendering suffers from a lack of balance, resulting in a lack of seating in the first part of the spectrum (bass / low midrange), and a fairly acidic aspect in the second (midrange / treble).

An improvement over last-year's pro model but not perfect
Let me just start off by saying that xiaomi is the undisputed king of providing the best value for money in ears in the business. You really won't be finding a better deal that these earbuds. Some companies give good sound quality for a little bit more money but have awful build quality or they have good build but subpar audio. Xiaomi truly does not compromise and I find that admirable. That being said as consumers we can still praise and give constructive criticism all the same. I have the xiaomi in ear pro from last year for comparison so that's what I'm going to do.
The good:
Overall the build quality I would say is an upgrade from last year's model. Aesthetically the new brushed metal look its a bit more refined than last year's model and looks sleeker. The cable despite no longer being braided inspires more confidence. And the movement of the cable does not seem to cause as much noise when you have the earphones in. This is all great. I never really cared for the braided cable and this new cable seems better. The in line microphone and controls has been VASTLY improved. It use to have annoying plastic buttons that were very thin and I did not care for them at all. This new all metal design for the microphone and controls is great. The microphone itself seems the same quality. I would say that the actually earphone part looks better and seems as durable as its predecessor so no complaints there.
The sound quality itself blows me out of the water. They have done a great job improving over their previous model and have much improved mid range frequencies. In comparison to last year's you will notice a dramatic improvement in quality. I suspect that this is because the move from 2 drivers last year to 3 this year (2 balanced armatures and one dynamic). Bravo xiaomi. Pretty much every kind of music sounds respectable on this. I can't complain. This really is the highlight.
The also have some nice extras like a carrying case and a drawstring carrying pouch.
The bad & ugly:
The strain relief at the y-split has me anxious about longevity. The stain relief around the connector and the in line controls also have me worried. Granted they are on par with the previous model and the in ear headphones pro never failed despite some pretty serious abuse (i used them as gym earphones).
And also. Someone in xiao mi's design department need to do a major overhaul on their ear tips. They are just no good. I got rid of the original tips on the previous model and quickly switched to sony hybrid eartips on these as well. I know that there is going to be a limit to how nice these can get for this price point but I really can't stand the eartips they include. It is the absolute only thing I really don't like about them. I would legitimately forgo a lot the extras if they would just improve the ear tips. Having a better seal in the ear helps with sound quality so if you do pick these up, I would suggest digging up some ear tips to replace the ones on here.
Bottom line: These are incredible in many ways but they are not perfect simply because of the lackluster ear tips.
Update: Use comply foam tips
My expectation might have been to high. The music is really in your face. I am used to expansive soundstage. Base is bountiful while the highs shines literally. The treble at times sound sibilant and becomes unbearable in majority of the songs I played. I own sony xba 3 triple armature driver which is well known to have a sibilint treble. This xiaomi headset have twice the degree of sibilance compared to the xba 3. Aside from the shimmering highs, something is not right about the sound. I really cannot pinpoint whether its the mids or the base. Given the amount of base, it sounded anemic for some reason. Maybe mid bass lacks? I am spoiled with higher-end iems (xba H3, Im02, Im70, xba 3) and it is my fault for expecting a bit much.
UPDATE:
Sibilance can be tamed using comply TSX tips. I had one pair lying around and used it to see if it can change the high frequency. To my surprise, it actually did. Take note that the comply tsx has the earwax guard.
Verry good earbuds!
These are the best sounding Earbuds or headphones that I own. I own Samsung's, ihome, apple, ifrogz, skull candy, jvc, Sonny, KZ-ate, Koss, Sennhieser, and Bose. For the money these sound the best in my opinion. They are metal and we'll made. My only problem with them is if I put them in my ears as they are labeled, R and L, they fall out. If I put they left L in the R ear they fit great and stay in. My be labeled wrong. This doesn't bother me since they sound incredible!
no 1-year warranty!
I give 4 stars because there is no 1-year warranty but an Amazon warranty (41 days one I guess), and that was told by the seller. I was contacting the seller because the headphone has a problem in just 6 months that is unbalanced. But after I cleaned a lot of "dirt" from one side of the headphone metal cover, the headphone's sound is balanced again. To be honest, this headphone is still the most durability and has the most decent sound quality that I have had in my whole life.
PREMUIM QUALITY!!!
Although expensive, the material is very high quality and the audio experience is great. The noise cancellation is great when the music is being played at low volume. When there is no music playing I can barely hear anyone. They are so comfortable in my ear I could sleep with them in and forget that I have them in my ear, It's got great bass but not as good as Apple Earpods. The mic works great. It's sensitive so don't yell too loud when you're talking to someone on the phone. I like how it comes with a hard case and a soft pouch to put them in. I use the hard case all the time so that they can last longer. I use these earbuds ever since I got them very often, even when I work or when I do homework, or I want to block reality just to be in my dream world. For the price I would say it's very fair because out of many earphones I have used, these outclass many of them. I strongly recommend getting these earphones if you want premium ones.
Outstanding earbuds
I'm a big fan of Xiaomi ear buds, and - sonically - the latest version is balanced and full-sounding - absolutely no bass boom. They have a reassuring heft, and come in a shrink-wrapped box. I maintain that these buds are easily the best-sounding for the price, and the meticulous design recalls Apple (though the Xiaomi ear speakers sound significantly better)
However, the cables are thinner than before. The TPE-style (plastic lined) cable contrasts with the first generations of these buds, which had a thicker, fabric-lined (and kink-free) design.
Only time will tell if the buds will last, but the sound is so agreeable than you might want to take extra care with them. (Don't pull on the distal ends, wrap loosely.)
